Yto Barrada - Before History - Sternberg Press 2015

Before History catalogues the 2015 Abraaj Group Art Prize exhibition, featuring a body of work by prize winner Yto Barrada alongside existing works by shortlisted artists Sarnath Banerjee, Setareh Shahbazi, and Mounira Al Solh.
The exhibition explores the layering of time through historical artifice, considering history as a constructed sphere that is constantly in flux, simultaneously being buried and excavated.
At the heart of Yto Barrada’s new work, Faux départ (False Start) (2015), is a film questioning the authenticity of artefacts in the context of modern museology. Through a study of palaeontology in Morocco, the artist asks how history can be fabricated.
The catalogue takes the form of two artist books: one by Yto Barrada and the other developed in collaboration with the shortlisted artists. Together, they form a sculptural object, layered one upon the other.
