Keping Wang

Wang Keping (signed) - Flammarion 2022

The first major monograph devoted to Wang Keping’s mature practice, published by Flammarion in 2022. A founding member of the Stars (Xingxing) group, the first Chinese avant-garde artists’ movement, Wang Keping left China for France in 1984 and developed a highly distinctive sculptural language based on the direct transformation of wood. The book focuses on his monumental sculptures, in which trunks and branches are carved, hollowed, burned and polished to reveal simplified forms suggesting bodies, animals and organic presences. Rather than imposing a fixed iconography, Wang allows the natural structure of the wood to determine the final form, creating a tension between raw material and radical formal reduction. With a preface by Ai Weiwei and an essay by art historian Virginie Perdrisot-Cassan, the publication surveys a practice grounded in material, touch and the relationship between nature and the human figure.
