Dunja Hersak - Songye masks and figure sculpture - Ethnografica 1985
The precise function and symbolism of masks and figures is documented and carefully examined in this study of Songye sculpture. Stylistic characteristics of Songye art are examined and related to the type and function of the carvings and the significance of their cultural role; there also is an attempt to classify the sculpture on the basis of its regional origins. This work makes a major contribution toward filling the large gap of information available on the ethnographic and symbolic function of Songye art.
