Thomas Ruff - Surfaces, Depths - Kunsthalle Wien 2009
Oberflächen Tiefen / Surfaces Depths was published in 2009 on the occasion of Thomas Ruff's solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien.
This volume presents a representative selection of Thomas Ruff’s work spanning approximately 25 years, from portraits and interiors to telescope and space-probe images and his Nightsight photographs. Ruff explores a remarkably wide range of subjects—people, architecture, planets and the Internet—through an equally diverse array of photographic technologies. His fascination with techniques developed for military and scientific purposes, which often seem to eliminate the artist’s hand, is central to his practice. Surfaces and Depths focuses on ten of his eighteen projects, examining this ongoing interest in artistic detachment and the tension between surface and depth in image-making. It offers the most comprehensive assessment to date of the work of this tireless innovator.
