Original 1978 German pressing on ECM, Music for 18 Musicians is the landmark recording of Steve Reich’s seminal minimalist composition, performed by Reich and his ensemble. Recorded in 1976, the piece unfolds through interlocking pianos, marimbas, xylophones, voices, strings and clarinets, built around shifting rhythmic and harmonic patterns. Released as ECM 1129, it became one of the defining recordings of American minimalism and a landmark release for ECM’s New Series.
