Gerhard Richter - Landscapes - Hatje Cantz 2011
Gerhard Richter began painting landscapes in 1963, but it was not until the Corsica landscapes of 1968 that the so-called romanticising landscape developed into an independent group of works in his oeuvre. For a while, Richter exhibited these paintings in a dialectic relationship with his Abstract Paintings - not to emphasise their differences, but rather, to point out their similarities. But compared to other works produced around the same time, such as the inpaintings, the colour charts or the gray paintings, these Landscapes do indeed exude a presence that is fascinating as it is disturbing.
