Willem de Rooij - Pierre Verger in Suriname - König 2020
Photographer, ethnologist, and babalawo Pierre Fátúmbí Verger (1902-1996) studied the traffic and relationship between the cultures of the African Diaspora and those of West Africa. In 1948 Verger made 257 images during an eight-day trip through Suriname.
Willem de Rooij's installation Pierre Verger in Suriname connects the spectator and these images by means of a viewing device.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Portikus Frankfurt, from November 7th 2020 to January 31th 2021, this book makes the complete suite of images publicly accessible for the first time and features essays by Karin Amatmoekrim, Ayrson Heraclito, Philippe Pirotte, Richard Price and Gloria Wekker.
Edited by Christina Lehnert, Philippe Pirotte, and Willem de Rooij.
