Christopher Wool - East Broadway Breakdown - Holzwarth 2003
Christopher Wool’s East Broadway Breakdown brings together 160 black-and-white photographs taken at night between 1994 and 1995 on the Lower East Side of New York. Shot with a 35mm camera, the images record deserted streets, deteriorating storefronts, staircases and fragments of the urban environment through extreme contrasts and oblique viewpoints. The resulting photographs oscillate between documentary observation and abstraction, closely echoing the visual strategies of Wool’s paintings. Designed by Hans Werner Holzwarth and Christopher Wool.
