Villers Bernard

Bernard Villers (signed) - Mikado - édition du remorqueur 1994

Each page of the book is occupied by the elongated, curving silhouette
of a eucalyptus leaf, in a seemingly indeterminate position, as if the leaves had been dropped at random, like the chopsticks in a game of Mikado. Only one side of each page is silk-screened and the printed pages are placed face-to-face, so that we pass alternately from a printed double page combining two sheets into a blank double-page spread, where the silhouettes of the superimposed silhouettes of the preceding and following pages. This principle of mirrored composition is underscored by the cover design the cover and, above all, by the position of the title, unusually placed on page 2, which is initially read upside down - by transparency, by opening the book - and is found on page 3. at the end, written backwards (odakim) to reconstitute the word
mikado by turning the penultimate page.
