Batia Suter - Cloud Service - Roma Publications / Printed Matter 2019

Published on the occasion of Batia Suter’s 2019 exhibition at Printed Matter in New York, Cloud Service brings together a sequence of found images centred on clouds and cloud-like forms. Drawing from Suter’s extensive collection of books, encyclopaedias and other printed sources, the publication moves between aerial views, geological formations, landscapes, plants, animals and other organic structures. Images originating from different periods, sources and scales are placed in unexpected proximity, creating visual correspondences and associations that shift between the scientific, the natural and the surreal. The book is characteristic of Suter’s practice of appropriation and image sequencing, in which existing photographic material is transformed through juxtaposition and repetition.
