Enzo Mari - Proposta per un'autoprogettazione - Galleria Milano 1974
A project for making easy-to-assemble furniture using rough boards and nails.
An elementary technique to teach anyone to look at present production with a critical eye.
Compiled by the Duchamp centre and printed for the exhibition at the Galleria Milano in 1974.
First edition.
The quality-quantity ratio is central to the whole of industrial production: quality is determined when the shape of a product does not "seem" but simply "is".
This statement, anything but a paradox, is not however understood by most people. And this makes it particularly difficult to execute projects of real worth. As a result, whenever possible I try to involve people not only with words but "other" deeds.
In 1974 I thought that if people were encouraged to build a table with their own hands, for example, they wouldd be able to understand the thinking behind it. This is why I published the "Proposta per un'autoprogettazione".
