Published in conjunction with Luc Tuymans’s 2010 exhibition The Reality of the Lowest Rank: A Vision of Central Europe at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, this substantial monograph brings together paintings, drawings and archival material from a body of work concerned with Central European history, political power and collective memory. Tuymans draws on photographs, documents and historical imagery, translating them into deliberately muted and fragmentary paintings that resist straightforward historical narration. The publication includes extensive reproductions of the works alongside essays examining Tuymans’s engagement with post-war European history, representation and the construction of historical memory.
