Jon Hassell’s landmark debut album develops his concept of “Fourth World” music, blending trumpet, electronic processing and synthesizers with percussion inspired by African and other musical traditions. Featuring Naná Vasconcelos, David Rosenboom and other collaborators, the six-part album moves between ambient textures, hypnotic rhythms and experimental soundscapes. Recorded in Toronto in 1976 and produced by Hassell, it remains a seminal work at the intersection of ambient, experimental music and contemporary composition.
