Hans Hartung - Au commencement était la foudre/In the beginning was lightning - 5 Continents 2016

Published in conjunction with the exhibition Hans Hartung. Au commencement était la foudre at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2016, this monograph focuses on the relationship between Hartung’s work and the elemental forces that informed his practice. Bringing together paintings, drawings, photographs and archival material, the publication traces the development of his gestural language from the 1930s through the late works of the 1980s. Particular attention is given to the physical processes behind his mark-making, including scratching, scraping, spraying and the use of unconventional tools, placing his work within a broader history of post-war abstraction while emphasizing the experimental nature of his practice. With contributions by Fabrice Hergott, Pierre Wat, Matthieu Poirier and other specialists.
