Amédée Cortier - Ludion 2007
The subtitle says it all: 'The abstract works 1961-1976'. And so does one of Cortier's own quotations: 'Colour is the manifestation of light in the material. Colour is light. Painting is working with light, colour and space.'
From Expressionism in the 1930's, when his own career started, to cubism and to the further elaborated principles of Piet Mondriaan and André Lhote, Cortier conquered his position in art history, concentrating on form and colour. The artist, who passed away in 1976, is now considered to be the equal of such artists as Raoul De Keyser, Marthe Wéry, René Heyvaert, Guy Mees, Roger Raveel and Dan Van Severen.
