FOOD: an exhibition by White Columns, New York - König 1999

FOOD was an exhibition by White Columns, curated by Catherine Morris, presented from October 3, 1999 to February 13, 2000 in Munster, at the Westfalisches Landesmueum fur Kunst und Kulturgeschichte.
White Columns was founded in 1970 by a group of artists including Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark as an experimental platform for art. Originally located in SoHo (and known as the 112 Workshop/112 Greene Street), the organization was renamed White Columns when it moved to Spring Street in 1980.
This bilingual program contains essays and reproductions of photos and documents from the restaurant FOOD that Matta-Clark, Caroline Gooden and many others opened in 1971 at 127 Prince Street in SoHo. This project questions genealogical-historical taxonomies as well as the practice of the museum in general. Matta-Clark's critique of the mechanisms of the "art-operating-system" makes us realize that he did not only work on the borderlines between architecture and art, the museum and public space, urban space and private space, art and life, but it might also make us realize that the borders we presumed to be there might actually never have been there in the first place.
