Raymond Loewy - La laideur se vend mal - Gallimard 1953
From early childhood, Raymond Loewy dreamed of locomotives, automobiles and ships. At the age of fifteen, he ‘gave his heart to twelve magnificent creatures’: twelve locomotives in a P.L.M. warehouse. He left Europe for New York between the two wars.
His first impressions are recorded in this book, written thirty years later.
‘Elevators, coffee grinders, mechanical cranes, etc. were manufactured haphazardly, with the sole concern being that “it works”. When the era of mass production arrived, the country was flooded with products that were often of good quality, but unsightly and expensive.’
