John Baldessari & Goya - I saw it / Ich habe es gesehen - Albertina 1999
Published on the occasion of the exhibition John Baldessari und/and Francisco de Goya, works from Goya Series (1996/97) and Los Desastres de la Guerra (1808/63), Graphische Sammlung Albertina, 1999.
Baldessari's use of Goya's titles as texts equal in value to the depicted objects, both in compositional weight and evocative power, contrasts fundamentally with Goya's after-the-fact application of understated journalistic captions, underscoring or commenting upon a sequence of events. Whereas Goya proves the old maximum "A picture is worth a thousand words," Baldessari uses text and image in such a way that a word can both stand for and spawn a thousand pictures.
