Tenant of Culture

Tenant of Culture - Soft Opening 2020

First monograph of Dutch artist Tenant of Culture, published by Charles Asprey and the London gallery Soft Opening. The art practice of Hendrickje Schimmel, Tenant of Culture is concerned with repurposing last season’s fashion waste into fossilised sculptures. Working closely with the artist, Studio Ardworks was brought on board for the editorial concept and structure of the book as well as the art direction of the photography.
Following the logic of de- and reconstruction, the book consists of a dozen signatures of varying paper stocks that are glued and held together by an exposed binding gaze – an element usually tucked underneath a book’s cover. The photography is a nod to glossy fashion editorials, combining the full-bleed close-ups of ads with product packshots for the plate section and a list of works reminiscent of trade catalogue indexes. Jeppe Ugelvig’s essay is printed on ochre-coloured paper stock. The interview with 650mAh is printed on the back of a technical drawing, based on a garment Tenant of Culture made during a workshop by.
The Tenant of Culture monograph was awarded Most Beautiful Swiss Book 2020.
