Robert Longo - Men in the Cities - Schirmer/Mosel 2015

The work of the American artist Robert Longo (b. 1953) is characterised by a wide variety of media: painting, drawing, photography, installation, as well as music and film. Longo became famous in the 1980s with his series Men in the Cities: larger-than-life black-and-white drawings of men and women in office attire, their bodies contorting and twisting, shaking and turning, as if in a dance, yet one lacking music. The source material and inspiration for Longo’s famous series were photographs of friends that he took above the rooftops of New York between 1976 and 1982. This book "Men in the Cities" brings together these rarely seen photographs, which, with their intensity and individuality, constitute an artistic statement in their own right.
