Paul Grund - Damaged - Serpent Press 2025
In Damaged, Paul Grund turns his lens on Los Angeles, not as a dream factory or a cinematic backdrop, but as a city that has already been destroyed. Echoing photographer Lewis Baltz’s sombre observation that Los Angeles ‘has already been destroyed, then left standing as a warning’, the work challenges the glossy mythology that usually defines it. Grund’s camera traverses a fractured landscape of walls, road bridges and indifferent geometry, revealing a city built upon disconnection.
Taken almost entirely from inside a moving car, the photographs are born of movement and constraint. There is no time to compose or wait; the images are captured instinctively, like the rapid calculations of a skateboarder reading the urban surface. The result is a sequence of moments that oscillate between recognition and accident — a visual rhythm that reflects the way we move through cities to which we do not fully belong.
