Nellanutella by Gelatin - König 2001
“How does one define the identity of a city whose hallmark is mystery?” asks Andreas Ruby, finding the Austrian artist collective Gelatin’s answer particularly compelling.
The book was published on the occasion of the 2001 49th Venice Biennale. It famously takes inspiration from Yves Klein's iconic 1960 photograph "Le Saut dans le vide" (Leap into the void), which depicted the artist majestically defying gravity. However, in stark contrast to Klein's graceful performance, Gelatin's Nellanutella features the four group members repeatedly throwing their bodies into the filthy, murky canals of Venice.
The publication captures this anarchic, anti-establishment performance, transforming what could be a glamorous artistic tradition into a gritty, humorous defiance of the fall.
