Steven Shearer - 19/11/04 - 02/01/05 - Contemporary Art Gallery 2004

Steven Shearer became known for work spanning painting and collage. His practice explored the aesthetics of the 1970s, focusing on youth culture, rebellion, and the symbolic energy of adolescence. Drawing from an archive of found images—such as amateur music collections and teen idols like Shawn Cassidy—he reflected on identity, fandom, and autobiographical themes.
This publication accompanied a 2004 exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery, presenting a range of Shearer’s work from that period. At its center was a sculptural installation: a steel garden shed housing a guitar P/A system that played a commissioned heavy metal solo. Amplified through the structure, the sound became distorted, forming an intense, enclosed tribute to youthful angst.
