Magiciens de la terre: Retour sur une exposition légendaire 1989-2014 - Editions Xavier Barral / Centre Pompidou 2014
This book, published to mark the 25th anniversary of Magiciens de la terre, is a formidable testimony to what this exhibition, so widely commented on around the world, really was, and to what it represented a turning point in the history of art. For the first time, this handsome book offers a complete overview of the 1989 scenography in the two venues, the Centre Pompidou and La Grande Halle de la Villette, through more than 410 previously unpublished photographs and testimonials from artists such as Alfredo Jaar, Francesco Clemente, Ilya Kabakov and Chéri Samba.
The second part of the exhibition gives the floor to those who were involved at the time: Mark Francis, André Magnin and Aline Luque, associate curators, and Hou Hanru, who witnessed first-hand the discovery of Chinese artists. The approach of Jean-Hubert Martin is illuminated by a text by Raymonde Moulin and a perspective by Annie Cohen-Solal.
Co-published with Éditions Xavier Barral, Paris. Edited by Annie Cohen-Solal, with the collaboration of Jean-Hubert Martin.
