Lorna Simpson - Phaidon 2002
Lorna Simpson is a well-known photo-based artist and filmmaker, one of the key representatives of African-American visual culture. Emerging in the 1980s, Simpson juxtaposes elegant, often haunting photographic images of black women, seldom in full view, with fragmented of texts. While commenting richly on the ways in which black women are seen, and the ways in which they see themselves, Simpson raises searching, philosophical questions about the relationship between image and text, and about the construction of the self.
