Book:
In 1931, Marcel Griaule, accompanied by M. Larget, M. Leiris, É. Lutten, J. Mouchet, later joined by A. Schaeffner, D. Lifszyc, G.-L. Roux, embarked on a two-year mission to Africa - the Dakar-Djibouti mission - organised by the Institute of Ethnology of the University of Paris and the Museum of Natural History.
It was in the cliffs of Bandiagara in French Sudan (today Mali) that the team met the Dogon of Sanga for the first time and began to gather a rich documentation on Dogon traditions and religion in an interdisciplinary survey. From this first expedition and during two subsequent missions in 1935 and 1937, Griaule was to take an interest in the institution of the awa, societies of the Masks involving all Dogon men. Masques dogons, a classic that has been republished several times since 1938, is both a reflection on and an interrogation of the meaning and role of this institution.
Including 32 plates of b&w illustrations.
