Mike Kelley - Phaidon 1999
Los-Angeles based sculptor, performance and installation artist Mike Kelley is among the most significant American artists. From his performances and drawings of the early 1980s to his assemblage sculptures using craft materials, to room-sized 'architectural models' reconstructed from memories, Kelley seamlessly combines the aesthetics of D.I.Y., illustration and psychedelia with modern sculpture, painting and architecture. Often childhood and adolescence are referenced, with all the sexual ambiguity, experimentation and low humour associated with those age groups. Kelley's art has been internationally recognised in the 1980s and 1990s for its ability to reveal the social and moral fabric of contemporary culture. In 1993 a retrospective exhibition of his work was organised by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The Bourse du Commerce-Fondation Pinault, Paris is devoting a major retrospective to him in 2023.
