Rineke Dijkstra - A retrospective - Guggenheim 2012

In works of classical simplicity and remarkable psychological depth, Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra presents a contemporary take on the genre of portraiture. Dijkstra is fascinated by people in states of significant transition, whether adolescents, soldiers, or new mothers. Her sensitive pictures generate a monumental sense of presence, not only in how they record the details of an individual’s physical appearance, but also in how they illuminate subtly shifting inner states. This richly illustrated exhibition catalogue, published in conjunction with the artist’s first major retrospective in North America, highlights both Dijkstra’s large-scale color photographs and her video installations. The plates are accompanied by interviews with the artist and nine of her portrait subjects, insightful essays by exhibition curators Jennifer Blessing and Sandra S. Phillips, and catalogue entries that further illuminate Dijkstra’s multifaceted body of work.
