D'Hollander Ilse

Ilse D'Hollander - Frac Auvergne 2016

Ilse D'Hollander's creative time was very short, barely a decade, until her untimely death in 1997. During the last two years of her life, which were particularly prolific, she produced four hundred paintings and one thousand seven hundred gouaches on paper. After leaving Ghent, she settled in the small rural town of Paulatem, dividing her time between frenetic painting and long walks in the Flemish Ardennes countryside. These few months saw the birth of most of her work, in which she fully embraced the anachronistic aspect of a painting conceived as an extension of the masters of the past (Paul Cézanne, Giorgio Morandi, Nicolas de Staël were decisive), while exploring the paths of abstraction with total freedom.
Published on the occasion of the Ilse D'Hollander exhibition at FRAC Auvergne, from October 8 to December 30, 2016.
