Bernd & Hilla Becher - Framework Houses - Schirmer/Mosel 2000
Bernd and Hilla Becher, who enjoy international recognition for their consistent documentary photography of industrial buildings, show in this early cycle of works on the half-timbered houses of the Siegerland how industrial conditions characterise the appearance and character of an entire region. For a long time, the use of wood for building purposes was rationed by law, as charcoal was the only source of energy needed to smelt the local iron ore deposits and ensure prosperity. This strict limitation on the one hand, structural and static necessity and aesthetic sensibility on the other, led to a very special type of half-timbered house and village. The present volume - the result of almost 20 years of work - was the artists' first thematically complete work.
