Balthus - Skira 1978
This volume explores the work of Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, the Polish-French modern artist renowned for his erotically charged depictions of adolescent girls and the refined, dreamlike atmosphere of his imagery. Celebrated today with a stature comparable to that of the Old Masters, the artist revealed little about his personal life, which remains surrounded by an aura of legend. His private, dispersed, and rarely exhibited paintings have inspired both fascination and controversy. Resistant to the demands of fashion and publicity, Balthus rejected what he regarded as triviality, carefully maintaining a boundary between the social world and the intimate realm in which artistic creation unfolds.
