Purple Books n°1 - Mark Borthwick: Are Plants People? - L'Esprit Frappeur 2000

Mark Borthwick belongs to a generation of photographers who, in the 1990s, changed fashion's imagery. Breaking the conventions of fashion photography, he developed a style that was at once intuitive and personal, integrating elements, props, attitudes, that touch contemporary art, environmental issues, interior and architectural design, and a reverence for clothes as works of art. Borthwick is a regular contributor to such
magazines as i-D, Italian Vogue, Purple, Harper's Bazaar, and has had several books of his photography published, notably in Tokyo and Paris, as well as having his work exhibited in art galleries. This book, composed of fashion images, landscape pictures, and a variety of personal shots, is Borthwick's version of a diary. It not only contains things that inspire and interest him, it also reveals how his free-style photography situates itself between fashion and art.
