Lee Friedlander - Kitaj - Fraenkel Gallery 2002
Kitaj by Lee Friedlander chronicles both an intimate friendship of more than three decades and an aesthetic evolution of two major American artists. Friedlander and Kitaj became friends in 1970, when both were teaching at UCLA. Though one was a painter and the other a photographer, the two artists were aware of shared sensibilities. Kitaj begins and ends with photographs from Los Angeles, and the artist’s passage from raw and vigorous young man to grizzly, white-haired prophet is charted through more than ninety images. The book includes a reminiscence by Kitaj himself, as well as an introduction by Friedlander’s wife, Maria.
