Anna Barham - Return to Leptis Magna - 2010

Return To Leptis Magna is composed entirely from anagrams of the title, revealing streams and webs of words, associations and meanings embedded within the phrase. Written with dream-like logic one theme gives way to another, pushing language to its figurative limits and charting a territory according to the contingencies of spelling. The reference to Leptis Magna and the use of the words as the substance of the book, come from the idea of a sculptural equivalence between the fragmented architecture of the ruined Roman city and letters as the basic units of written language, each capable of constructing multiplicities of new forms.
