Raoul de Keyser & Luc Tuymans - S.M.A.K. 2001

Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Raoul De Keyser & Luc Tuymans: Paintings, Drawings" at S.M.A.K, Gent, one year after Tuymans was selected to exhibit in the Belgian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In part, they have followed their public careers along the same trajectory, from Documenta IX and Antwerp's Zeno X Gallery, through Bern's Kunsthalle, Portikus in Frankfurt to David Zwirner in New York.
At the S.M.A.K., they opted to make a mixed presentation of their oeuvres, with old and new work. This choice was surprising for two artists who in the past made serious and thoughtful exhibitions that were always emphatically conceived as a whole. Although the parallel also ends there. While De Keyser often hangs his presentations on a painting process, treated as a kind of theme, Tuymans suggests a thematic coherence by bringing together works under loaded exhibition titles.
