Exhibition catalog. Gerhard Richter's 15-picture series October 18, 1977 is one of the most important works of political art of the 20th century. It commemorates the day on which Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan Carl Raspe, members of the terrorist Baader-Meinhof group imprisoned in the high-security wing of Stuttgart-Stammheim, were found dead in their prison cells. Their suicide, which was often contradicted by the thesis of murder, was the dramatic climax of the events of the "German Autumn". Richter painted the cycle eleven years after the events, which still traumatize the Federal Republic of Germany today, and through his art he brings them back into the collective consciousness against forgetting.
