Takashi Murakami - Superflat - Madra 2000

This publication was produced on the occasion of the exhibition with the same title. Superflat is a term of Takashi Murakami's creation which refers to a tendency towards two-dimensionality in Japanese visual art, animation, graphic design, and fashion. Tracing this flatness back to pioneers of Japanese painting in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, Murakami suggests that this legacy is resurrected in the post-World War II rise of the Japanese cartoon cultures of manga (comic books) and anime (animation). The exhibition was held at Parco Gallery in Tokyo and Nagoya in 2000, MOCA Gallery, Los Angeles, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, in 2001.
