The starting point for Liam Gillick's Underground (Fragments of Future Histories) is the very first science fiction novel, Fragments of Future Histories, written in 1884 by Gabriel Tarde. The French philosopher, sociologist and criminologist depicted in his novel the collective workings of a society that has taken refuge in the centre of the Earth following a climatic disaster. Liam Gillick wrote a contemporary adaptation of Tarde's text, working from his 1904 English translation with a preface by H.G. Wells. Gillick in turn added a preface by the Italian sociologist Maurizio Lazzarato.
